This is a recording of a talk given by Nikkei Australia’s founding member Dr Keiko Tamura and Chairperson Elysha Rei about Japanese ‘war brides’ at the Queensland State Archives in Brisbane on 25 August 2023. The event was jointly hosted by the Japanese Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane and the Queensland State Archives.

‘In this talk Dr Tamura (author of Michi’s Memories) will cover the national narrative of war bride arrival in Australia, and Elysha Rei will share her family history story of her grandmother – a war bride who was based in Queensland.

This presentation will illuminate the stories and experiences of Japanese women who immigrated to Australia as war brides in the 1950s, marking more than 70 years since the first Japanese war bride arrived in Australia in 1952.’
